Live updates: U.S. coronavirus toll tops 50,000; FDA issues hydroxychloroquine warning, citing serious effects, including death
These days, it’s not easy having a name like Corona.
Eight-year-old Corona De Vries discovered as much when bullies at his school in Helensvale, Australia, started calling him “coronavirus.” He used to love his name, he said, but now the incessant taunting was making him “sad and angry.”
Along came Tom Hanks — and a typewriter — to cheer him up.
Hanks, the first U.S. celebrity to announce he had contracted the virus, sent the grade-schooler a heartfelt letter earlier this month, an Australian television station reported on Thursday.
“Thank you for being such a good friend,” the beloved Hollywood actor wrote. “Friends make their friends feel good even when they are down.”
In March, Hanks revealed that both he and his wife, the singer Rita Wilson, had tested positive while in Australia, where he was getting ready to film an Elvis Presley biopic. When Corona heard about the diagnosis, he sent the two-time Oscar winner a letter.
