Live updates: Trump defends U.S. protests against coronavirus restrictions as global lockdowns trigger unrest
President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club has furloughed 153 employees, extending the Trump Organization’s growing list of layoffs to one of the president’s favorite destinations, according to a new filing in Florida.
The Palm Beach private club — where Trump often meets foreign leaders, and his recently chosen primary residence — has been closed since late March. As the pandemic spread last month, Mar-a-Lago attracted scrutiny after a Brazilian official who met Trump at the club later tested positive for the coronavirus. Mar-a-Lago is a wintertime club and typically closes for the season next month.
The Trump Organization has now laid off or furloughed more than 2,600 employees as the outbreak has forced most of the company’s hotels and golf clubs to close, including nearly all the top revenue-producing properties, according to state filings and people familiar with the properties.
The layoffs at Mar-a-Lago included 32 servers, 19 valet attendants and 11 dishwashers, according to a filing with the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.
